Exactly how it works

It blocks the reuptake of dopamine at the synapses between nerve cells, raising the amount of available dopamine in the frontal lobes as well as in various other parts of the brain. It seems to do so in a rather different way to methylphenidate. It also raises the levels of several other transmitters and has a stimulatory effect on brain centres controlling alertness, sleep and wakefulness. There are contradictory findings and competing theories, so the simplest thing to say is that we don’t know exactly how it works.
